Emilio Isgrò

Barcellona di Sicilia, Italia 1937

Emilio Isgrò, born in 1937 in Barcellona, Messina, is an artist of remarkable vision and innovation. In addition to being an internationally renowned painter, Isgrò has enriched the cultural landscape with his poetry and theatrical direction, showcasing a unique versatility. Regarded as one of Italy’s pioneering conceptual artists, Isgrò first gained global recognition with a work that captivated attention at the Venice Biennale. This initial success was followed by a prestigious first prize at the São Paulo Biennial in 1977, solidifying his status as a leading figure in the international art scene. Initially known for his painting, Isgrò discovered his true calling in conceptual art, moving away from traditional techniques to explore and develop new ideas. In the 1960s, he pioneered visual poetry and created his first art books, introducing an innovative approach that transformed both his work and the perception of art. One of his most celebrated creations is his intervention on Dante’s Divine Comedy, where he erased the word “comedy” to elevate the text to a purely divine dimension. This act of erasure is not merely an aesthetic gesture but a profound reflection on the protection and preservation of words, which become sacred through his intervention. Isgrò remains a significant figure in the art world, whose work challenges and enriches our understanding of creativity and visual expression. Museums and Public Collections: Emilio Isgrò’s works are held in numerous prestigious museums and public collections, including: • National Museum of 21st Century Arts (MAXXI), Rome • National Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art, Rome • Museum of the Twentieth Century, Milan • Gallery of Modern Art (GAM), Turin • Museum of Contemporary Art Rome (MACRO) • Museum of Contemporary Art of Trento and Rovereto (MART) • Contemporary Art Museum of Milan (PAC) • Museum of Modern Art of Bologna (MAMbo) • Peggy Guggenheim Collection, Venice • Museum of Contemporary Art of Palazzo Riso, Palermo • Museum of Contemporary Art of Prato
